چکیده

We present a new active contour-based, statistical method for simultaneous volumetric segmentation of multiple subcortical structures in the brain. Neighboring anatomical structures in the human brain exhibit co-dependencies which can aid in segmentation, if properly analyzed and modeled. Motivated by this observation, we formulate the segmentation problem as a maximum a posteriori estimation problem, in which we incorporate statistical prior models on the shapes and inter-shape (relative) poses of the structures of interest. This provides a principled mechanism to bring high level information about the shapes and the relationships of anatomical structures into the segmentation problem. For learning the prior densities based on training data, we use a nonparametric multivariate kernel density estimation framework. We combine these priors with data in a variational framework, and develop an active contourbased iterative segmentation algorithm. We test our method on the problem of volumetric segmentation of basal ganglia structures in magnetic resonance (MR) images. We compare our technique with existing methods and demonstrate the improvements it provides in terms of segmentation accuracy.

A multivariate analysis of neuroanatomic relationships in a genetically informative pediatric sample.

An important component of brain mapping is an understanding of the relationships between neuroanatomic structures, as well as the nature of shared causal factors. Prior twin studies have demonstrated that much of individual differences in human anatomy are caused by genetic differences, but information is limited on whether different structures share common genetic factors. We performed a multi...

Reliable Segmentation of Subcortical Gray Matter Structures Using Magnetization Transfer (mt) Maps

Introduction: While much work has been devoted to MRI-based segmentation and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) of cortical anatomy, comparatively few studies have investigated deep grey matter structures. These are of particular interest for study of the structural correlates of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders associated with basal ganglia dysfunction (1). The relatively small number of...

Automatic segmentation of neonatal brain MRI using atlas based segmentation and machine learning approach

Volumetric measurements of neonatal brain tissue classes have been suggested as an indicator of long-term neurodevelopmental performance. To obtain these measurements, accurate brain tissue segmentation is needed. We propose a novel method for segmentation of axial neonatal brain MRI that combines multi-atlas-based segmentation and supervised voxel classification to segment eight different tiss...

Automated segmentation of multifocal basal ganglia T2*-weighted MRI hypointensities

Multifocal basal ganglia T2*-weighted (T2*w) hypointensities, which are believed to arise mainly from vascular mineralization, were recently proposed as a novel MRI biomarker for small vessel disease and ageing. These T2*w hypointensities are typically segmented semi-automatically, which is time consuming, associated with a high intra-rater variability and low inter-rater agreement. To address ...

Behçet's Disease Long Time after Sulfur Mustard Poisoning

Dear Editor, A 35-year-old man presented with severe headache and left sided hemiparesis since one day prior to admission. He reported frequent bouts of oral and genital aphthous ulcers, an attack of deep venous thrombosis of left lower extremity, one episode of right knee arthritis, and several attacks of headache, neck rigidity, and fever. He had been a victim of mustard-gas poisoning at the ...
